Alphabe Thursday – G is for Give Me Oil …

Jenny Matlock

One of the things that I am most looking forward to about our wedding is the singing, the hymns. I think that we are having more than most and we have had to cut some out to ensure that the ceremony is not too long.

Do you like hymns? Do you like ours?

At the start of the service we are going to sing two hymns back to back, Sing Hosanna and Praise Him. These are both school hymns and we will have CDs playing with children singing them to help fill the church with music and voices. Also all the children at the ceremony will have tambourines, bells and shakers to accompany the music. It will be an uplifting start to the marriage ceremony and give it a fun, family feel. I hope!

The next hymn comes after the vows and the marriage, the exchange of rings. We wanted something celebratory and uplifting for this moment and have chosen, He’s Got The Whole World In His Hands. A great family friendly song, with actions too!

The next hymn is one that reminds me of my Nan and it will be used as a quiet time of reflection in the service when we will remember absent friends and family. This will be a time to think of people we have lost and also people , like my pregnant sister in Australia, who cannot be with us to share our special day.

The final hymn will be One More Step Along the World I Go, a wedding favourite that we sang at my christening in 2009 and also reminds me of Leavers’ Services that I organised when I taught Year 6.

I think we have a good selection of well known hymns that hopefully other people will enjoy singing as much as I do.

What hymns did you have at your wedding? What would you choose now for your special day?

3 months to go til our big day!!!!

  1. What a wonderful songs you have planned for your ceremony! It sounds like fun!
I have a photo (taken by a friend) of a group of us singing a hymn-like song during the reception. I don’t remember what it was, but that the singing of it was spontaneous. And we look angelic in the photo.

  2. I love your choices do you go to church often? I dont know what I would choose now I especially like one more step it was traditional at all my childrens year 6 leavers assemblies makes me cry every time..
    Happy wedding day

    • Before the babies came we went all the time but it has been tricky since their arrival as fo the first few months of their life we had to avoid busy places beacuse of infection risks and then our vicar left so we have not been in a while. I do hope that the wedding and the preparations will mean that we will start to go regularly again.

  3. We had Great is Thy Faithfulness and Joyful Joyful We adore Thee at our wedding, and a song called “Father of Lights” when we lit the unity candle. I loved all the music at our wedding, but haven’t thought about it much recently. Sounds like your going to have some sweet happy songs and a lovely day. Congrats!

  4. It sounds like your music is going to be glorious. I love the remembrance hymn you are using, and the rest sound perfect, too.

I’m really enjoying reading about your wedding planning. You are going to have a gorgeous little book when we get through the Alphabet.

    Thanks for linking up.

    A+
