Raining Books and Blogs!

Day 3 of the Nairn Henley Holiday

Saturday 11th June 2011

Once again the babies had us up before 6am. At home our nursery is completely blacked out and so I think that they are struggling to sleep with the light. This could be something of an issue for the week as it does not get dark here until almost midnight. It is amazing! Funny though how a couple of years ago we would have made the most of those light evenings now we are wishing them away so that the babies might get some sleep. It is funny how our holiday day ends in exhaustion at 7pm rather than an exciting holiday evening beginning. Holidays have changed in nature for us but in a good way.

The itinerary I so carefully planned for this holiday is out of the window too. Due to weather! After weeks of gorgeous sunshine and balmy climes wouldn’t you know that the week we choose for a holiday the rain comes down!!

Not ones to be put off by a little rain though we headed into Alnwick for a walk around the historic market town whilst Esther and William slept. In their buggy obviously, we did not leave them home alone!

Alnwick is steeped in history and outstanding architecture. It has an aulde world feel even now. David was amazed to find two historical items of interest. The first was some hundred year old bottles on display in a pub window. The old bottles had been positioned there hundreds of years ago by an old man who died whilst placing the final bottle. The story goes that the bottles are cursed and so have been left in that place ever since for no man knows what their fate might be should they be the one to remove the bottles. What a great story! The other historical artefact was a Sony cassette walkman on sale in a shop window for £18.99!

After our walk we returned to the cottage for second breakfast and so the babies could play whilst we planned our day.

It was going to remain a rainy day and so we decided to head to Barter Books secondhand bookshop for a browse and to enable me to post my MAD Blog Awards Vlog.

Esther and William had some trouble sleeping late morning so we all piled in to the car and drove through the rain. We explored the wild, romantic countryside. It was quite bleak in the bad weather but in a good moody, atmospheric way. A novel setting with a romantic adventure just waiting to happen.

We drove to Seahouses, the sea did not look very inviting. We drove back to the cottage for lunch and then back to Alnwick to the bookshop

Barter Books stands in a lovely old railway station. People meet amongst the rows and columns of old books to read, chat over coffee, warm themselves by the roaring log fire and watch the miniature railway that roams around the shelves.

The shop has a great children’s sections with some classic books.
I used the internet to very quickly upload my MAD Finalist VLOG in the hope that it will get included in Monday’s carnival

I am struggling not having the Internet, still 6 or 7 nights to go!!! Had I booked this holiday when the blog was firmly up and running I might have chosen somewhere with the Internet but I am glad that I didn’t, as now David and I have to do other things in the evening. I wonder what we might do? Sleep most probably.

We had pizza for tea tonight after really struggling to get Esther to sleep. She is teething. Poor girl. And again the light does not help. We definitely need to look at blackout products before Devon and Spain!

This holiday is teaching David and I many lessons that will be useful for future holidays and for life at home. One of the main things I have learned so far is that I am so very glad that we do not have a television at home. We have Sky in the cottage and it is just so annoying! David is continuously flicking through channels to find that there is just nothing on except reruns of Top Gear and QI. How can there be so many television channels and none that show anything inspiring or original or even interesting? Give me my iplayer any day, where I can watch what I want when I want to!

We are hoping for better weather tomorrow as it rained today all day proving to be a total washout.

We are off to Hogwarts regardless and David is, as we speak, making his peace with Harry Potter and reading the first book!! He always said that he would when we had children to read it to and he is, as always, true to his word. We are going to watch the film tomorrow night! After our visit to the school of witchcraft and wizardry! Hurrah!
