Advent Book Review 13: The Fourth King

The Fourth King is The Story of the Other Wise Man written and illustrated by Ted Sieger.

This is a fable that not only tells the tale of Mazzel, the fourth king. It is also a story that reminds us of the meaning of Christmas.

We have a hard back copy of this book and it is simply stunning. The colours of the illustrations are so rich and slightly humourous. It shows that this is a fable with a heart. Some of the illustrations are laid out in the format of a comic book which appeals to young readers, particularly boys.

The language is poetic and creates vivid images in the reader’s mind.

I love the relationship between Mazzel and his faithful camel, Chamberlin. Together they are following in the footsteps of the three kings to find the baby Jesus. They come across a range of trials and challenges along the way but always seem to find a way to continue on their journey.

There is a sense of something magical throughout this story and Mazzel demonstrates the best qualities that you would want to find in a man. He is kind and caring, determined and courageous. He goes out of his way to help other people and puts those most in need before himself.

He saves a group of enslaved children and knows that it will fall to him to save the tiny baby born in a stable.

When he arrives at the stable he finds it bare and knows that he was too late to save the new born king.

Or was he?

This is a wonderful story full of peace and goodwill. A story of hope for all people, everywhere.

If you have this book or are able to borrow it, please find time to read it this Christmas.

Seasons Greetings Everyone!
