Expecting Twins Debate at The Baby Show: Why Me?

I am so proud and absolutely honoured to have been asked to be part of a panel for the One Born Every Minute Expecting Twins Debate at this months’s Baby Show at London Excel.

I realise that some people attending the show and considering the debate may wonder, Why Me?

Well, I am a mummy of twins.

Twin Mummy

My twins were born in July 2010.

They were born 13 weeks too soon.

They spent 59 days in NICU and SCBU.

We brought them home a month before their due date and weighing around 5lbs.

We kept them safe through the winter known to premmie mummies as RSV Season.

I breastfed my twins for 15 months.

I successfully weaned them from 6 months using a combination of all types of baby food.

I developed play activities for my twins at all stages of infancy, toddlerhood and now as preschoolers.

I got out and about with twins and three children under three.

Esther and William are now above average in their development and doing amazingly well.

I have expected twins and think I am doing a pretty good job of raising them.

And I adore them, all twins, but especially my own.

I am really excited about having an opportunity to talk about my children and also meeting lots of parents at the beginning of the best rollercoaster ride on Earth.

What an honour!

What a privilege!

I cannot wait.

If you are still wondering, Why Me?

Then perhaps these blog posts from the archives will help you to see why I might be qualified.

  1. I think you are perfectly experience to talk about this. I am in awe of your courage to speak in front of an audience! I can never imagine a time when I might be able to do the same x

  2. Why not you? 🙂 I hope that there will be a balance too about twin pregnancies that end in full term, good sized babies – I say this because I spent my twin pregnancy in a state of terror, expecting that they would come early, be tiny etc etc. We bought premmie clothes in readiness and had to quickly get newborn clothes when they were born (EmCs) at 38 weeks weighing 5lb 11 and 7lb 3. I went to a TAMBA symposium at Addenbrookes when they were 3 months old, and several other mums had had the same experience, and were quite bitter about it. Yes, we were lucky that our babies went to term, and didn’t experience NICU/SCBU, but we were unnecessarily worried by the health professionals throughout pregnancy, when all talk was of ‘trying to get them to 36 weeks’, which I appreciate will seem like small fry compared to your experience, but it is still a scarring experience, particularly for a first pregnancy.

    • This is a really good point and I think everyone else on the panel is a professional with experience of term twins. I was not told my twins would be premature, I was expected to go to term but then I got poorly x I know lots of mummies with term twins so can reflect on my knowledge of their experiences too x Thank you for your comment x

  3. I wish I was going to the baby show to hear you talk, you have so much experience to share with twins! We were very lucky to make it to 37 weeks with ours and no problems but there was a point when we thought they would have to be delivered much earlier and hearing someone who has gone through it all would have been so useful. Such a great opportunity, enjoy! xx

  4. I think you will be fab at The Baby Show Jennie. Please please highlight the RSV season as I had 27 weeker twins too and not one HCP mentioned it once to me, despite 2 and a half months spent in NICU/SCBU. My boys then ended up being desperately poorly at 7 months with RSV bronchiolitis but luckily pulled through. I so wished I had known to keep them safer.
I hope you enjoy this opportunity, you have so much to give to the debate xx
