5 Inappropriate Songs from the 90s

It occurred to me today

How fast the days and weeks are passing

How quickly time flies these days

Even when life is not much fun

Soon my children will be as old as I used to be

What feels like just a few months ago

I forget looking at my adorable children

That one day they will grow

Tweens then teens

As we used to be

90s me

I don’t know what made me think back to the early 90s

When I first became a teen

But as I did I realised with absolute horror

How inappropriate the music of the day now sounds to me

Music I listened to at home

At youth club

In our family car!

Music I owned on vinyl, video and cassette

That I played on my walkman on the bus to school!!

90s me 2

I would be mortified if my children were singing along

I Wanna Sex You Up!

1991

I was 14 / 15

What was I doing listening and singing along to

I Wanna Sex You Up!?!

There were other songs

Better songs by proper bands

But also this …

It has never dawned on me before

The erotic nature of some of the songs

Filling the charts in my youth!

Let’s Talk About Sex

With just 5 of the inappropriate songs I loved in the 90s

  1. This is so true Jennie and so funny! In the first year of secondary school (1991), I was chosen to sing at the inter-form singing competition. The song we chose (a bunch of 11-year olds), was ‘Like a Virgin’. I stood up there on the stage in a conical bra made of tin foil and sung in front of the whole school. Can you even imagine?! The teachers mustve been horrified.

(please delete my first comment, my phone wasn’t being kind to me!)

  2. So many songs are sexual in nature or refer to drugs without many people realising (especially younger people), at least these ones tell you what they are about in the title 🙂 One that always gets me is Chain reaction by Diana Ross if you actually listen to the lyrics it is pure filth!

  3. In 1998, when my 12-year-old son was first taking an interest in pop music, we liked B*Witched singing C’est la vie. It was only recently when I went to replay it on YouTube that I read someone’s comments on it not being so innocent after all… and then I really listened to the words and wondered why I’d been so deaf back in the day. It’ll never be the same now.
