BFG

There are some authors that everyone should know

There are some books that every child should read

In fact The TES have just published their list

Of 100 books all children should read

Before they leave primary school

Though many of Roald Dahl’s classics make the list

(Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is number one!)

The BFG does not

I think the omission is a sad one

The BFG is an important book for young readers

A tale of friendship

Filled with love and humour

And an exciting exploration of language play

The BFG is a magical, exciting story

With shade and shadows

Alongside nonsense, fantasy and hilarity

We have read the book

Seen the films

And listened to David Walliams read the tale on CD

Over and over again

As a collective

My family LOVE The BFG

I have a rule in our house

That to see films on TV

Or shows at the theatre

We must first know the story

From reading or listening to the book

There is magic in the pages of a book

Detail in each individual imagination

That even the mighty Steven Spielberg

Cannot capture

Teaser Poster BFG

There is fun to be found

In the letters and sounds

Particularly of The BFG

I love the fast moving conversation

Between BFG and Sophie

About the flavours of different human beans

This is fun to read and to continue

Do human beans from Yorkshire taste of Yorkshire pudding?

Do humans from Kiev have the flavour of Chicken Kiev?

One of my favourite parts of the book

Is when The BFG describes to Sophie

All the wonderful things he can hear

This would make a wonderful stimulus for creative writing

What tiny sounds might The Big Friendly Giant hear?

There is so much inspiration in this story

So many dreams

There is love and courage

There is fear and sadness

But the overall feeling of this book is good

It’s gentle giant is a hero

The heroine is strong

Together on the page and screen

They are entrancing

When I took Esther and William to see the film

I was so thankful for the gentle hand of Steven Spielberg

Here laid out before me was all I had imagined

When reading the book

And more

So much more

If you have never read The BFG

Never shared the book with your child

Please do

It will be a wonderful adventure for both of you

Create a belief in magical things with your little people

Share the story of Sophie and her BFG

“We is in Dream Country,’ the BFG said. ‘This is where all dreams is beginning.”
― Roald Dahl, The BFG

A new edition of The BFG has been published this year

To coincide with the release of the film

It has a beautiful forward by Lucy Dahl

And some fun activities for children at the back

The book cost £6.99

And is available in all good bookshops

I was sent a copy of the book free of charge for the purpose of this review
