Friends Are Like Stars

As the skies darken

Out come the stars

Some big, some small

Some bright, some brighter

Some bursting and flashing

As they blaze brashly across the night sky.

Some burn steadily

A constant point of navigation

A familiar source of comfort

A twinkling source of light.

Some stars flare

Others flicker and fade

They glimmer in the distance

Lurking in the shadow of a cloud

In the star dust.

On clear nights

Bright nights

Twinkling starry sky nights

Gazing at the glitter nights

You will notice so much beauty

So much beauty

In places you have never looked before.

Stars that have always burned

Glittered in the distance

Flickered in the twilight

These are the stars that suddenly catch your eye

And steal your heart

The blazers, the burners

They dazzle with their brightness

Just as suddenly as they were there

They are gone.

It is not always the brightest

Nor twinkliest star

That is the most important up in the sky

It is the one at that moment

That lights your way

Guides you home

Helps you see

Makes you stop and stare and gaze

And wonder

Makes you wonder.

As the skies darken

Out come the stars

In all shapes and sizes

Letting you know they are there

A constant point of navigation

A familiar source of comfort

A twinkling source of light.

  1. Beautiful. I love your metaphors Jennie, they remind me of sailing and night watches when one is on deck alone, comforted by the familiar, yet daunted by the unknown that lies ahead, hoping to distinguish the true stars from obstacles.
