Lend Your Voice: Stop the Killing!

My favourite television programme ever is The West Wing. It stars Martin Sheen as the democratic president we all dream of for the United States. In one highly charged, emotional episode this president makes the decision to send young American soldiers, American children, to protect the families and children of Equatorial Kundu. Why? Because they are somebody’s children too!

If you saw someone attacking a child on the street in your town, would you stand idly by? Of course not! Then how can anyone stay quiet about the massacres in Syria.

As I write this I am feeding my daughter as my toddler twins have their breakfast with Daddy downstairs. I am confident that this will be a similar picture tomorrow morning and the morning after that and for many mornings to come.

Imagine the horror, the pain, the fear, of that confidence not being there.

This is what it must be like to be a mother in Syria right now. Living in fear of losing your children, of your children losing you.

Wondering if tonight will be the night when there will be a knock on your daw and a gun may be fired or a throat may be slit.

Wondering if in the morning the air will not be filled with squabbles and squeals but with only a still, haunting silence.

Wondering each day what tomorrow will bring and whether your children will live to see another day.

Questioning whether or not you want them to.

Unimaginable pain and fear.

A mother’s love is in equal measure everywhere.

Children are children everywhere.

We must not stand idly by!

By joining together to give Syria a voice we are giving hope and without hope we, they, all have nothing.

Thousands more children are experiencing terrible suffering and trauma in Syria, yet aid agencies like Save the Children aren’t yet able to get urgent help to these children who have been injured and traumatised by the conflict.

Unless more action is taken now to stop the fighting, we are likely to see the further slaughter of children in Syria.

Please sign our petition now, calling on world leaders to put in place an immediate and legally binding “Resolution to Protect Children” that carries the full force of international law on those attacking children and other civilians.

Please sign the Save the Children Petition to stop the killing.
