One Week In Italy: Maccagno and Calde

We were lucky enough to arrive at Milan Malpensa

In time for a hot and sunny weekend

We spent our first full day at Lido Locarno

And on the Saturday we went in search of more

Safe and pretty places to swim

We started in Maccagno

Which I had read about on family travel blog

Otis and Us

maccagno 1

We found the beach easily

It has a good size car park

It has safe lake access for swimming

And a platform you can swim out to

maccagno 2

This was a lovely place to spend the morning

Skimming stones, paddling and swimming in the lake

maccagno 3

The children loved finding sparkling pebbles

There was something very magical about playing in the shade of the mountains

maccagno 4

The beach has a cafe which we did not try

And a small children’s play area

The water here was a bit weedy

But it did not stop us all paddling

And David swimming

maccagno 3

We shared the beach with some friendly ducks and swans

But no other people

The stoney beach framed with trees

Is the closest beach to

Villa Caruso

Where we were staying as guests of

Bookings For You

maccagno 5

Jo, the owner

Was always on hand throughout our stay

To answer questions about the local area

Her knowledge is immense

And was such a huge help to us

In planning our days while staying on Lake Maggiore

The information book in the villa was very useful

We used it to help choose places to go and places to eat

The book was clearly written some years ago

So to also have Jo’s in the moment up to date

Know how

Was an invaluable perk of our stay

I did still Google lots of things

Read other travel blogs

And use Trip Advisor

Using a combination of all of the above

We decided to drive along the lake from Maccagno

To spend the afternoon swimming in Calde

We drove along the lake shore in Germignaga

Making a note to return there another day

As it looked really lovely

Calde though was beautiful

Really beautiful

calde 1

A small harbour

With cafes and restaurants

A perfect place for lunch

Or coffee with friends

A place to sit with a drink and a book

Or paper and paints

To really and truly enjoy the stunning scenery all around

calde 2

The beach was interesting to explore

And the water was so warm and clear

calde 3

Calde

The perfect place for us to eat our picnic

Skim stones

calde 5

Enjoy the beautiful view

The wonderful weather

And for Daddy, Esther and William a chance to swim

calde 4

After a busy day getting to know the eastern shores of Lake Maggiore

We headed home to our villa

To sit on the terrace

Paint the view

lake maggiore

And plan our next day’s venture

To Cannobio

On the western shore

villa caruso

Adventure awaits!

Avventura vi aspetta!

adventure awaits

We stayed for one week in Italy

With the wonderful Bookings For You

  1. Wow, what a beautiful place, your photos are stunning. The weather looks like it was fabulous too, and how wonderful that the owner was so attentive. So glad you had a great time.
