SAY HELLO TO THE GRUFFALO

View this post on Instagram

A mouse took a stroll … I have set up a story timeline for The Gruffalo for some early morning #bookishplay. I have set the characters out in the order they appear in the book so that the children can sequence, retell and act out the story. I have used our @bajowoodentoys Gruffalo figures that I bought from @babipur and a selection of trees from @holztiger_uk @ostheimerwoodentoys and @lankakade I have also created a path with cut up branches from trees in our garden. I plan to add some other autumnal nature treasures to the sensory storytelling set up tomorrow. The perfect story for the beginning of autumn. A story so well known and so well loved it is perfect for playing with. I cannot wait to see what they do with it tomorrow #somanywaystoplay #invitationtoplay #thegruffalo #juliadonaldson #axelscheffler #amousetookastrollthroughthedeepdarkwood #bookishplay #bookinspiredplay #autumnplay #weloveautumnplay #letthemplay #playmatters #sensorystorytelling #imaginativeplay #smallworldplay #play #bookishwaytoplay #thebookishplayway #thebookishwaytoplay #ourbookplay #edspireplays

PUMPKIN STORY BASKET

ALL ABOUT OWLS STORY BASKET

View this post on Instagram

As autumn arrives it is time to bring out the autumn books. Edie loves owls and so today I made her a little owl book basket. Containing lots of different cuddly owls, That’s Not My Owl and Night Noises from @usborne_books and Where’s Mr Owl from @nosycrow Edie loves to look through the books, read them to the owls, act out stories with the cuddly owls and take them off on adventures. For the morning I have set up a little owl and cat painting task with the books. She will use @littlebrianpaintsticks to colour in the animals featured in the books. #somanywaystoplay #bookishplay #bookbasket #invitationtocreate #invitationtoread #invitationtoplay #weloveautumnplay #autumnbooks #thatsnotmy #usbornebooks #nosycrow #nosycrowbooks #sensorystorytime #sensorystorytelling #toddlerbooks #lifttheflapbook #bookishwaytoplay #thebookishplayway #thebookishwaytoplay #ourbookplay #edspireplays

TAP THE MAGIC TREE INVITATION TO PLAY

View this post on Instagram

I have set up this #invitationtoplay for the morning. Inspired by the book Tap The Magic Tree, a wonderful interactive book showing how trees change though the seasons. Children are invited to tap the page, turn the page, shake the book to hell the magical changes along. It is a wonderful book to share with little people. It is perfectly suited to these stacking tree toys from @plantoysuk and @tenderleaftoys @threadbear.design I have also added some garden dominoes also from Tender Leaf Toys. I am hoping that the children will read the book together, talk about how trees change, think about what grows on trees, which animals live in, on and around trees. The tree in the book is an apple tree making this the perfect #invitationtoread as we continue our own apple harvest #bookishplay #bookinstagram #bookinspiredplay #weloveautumnplay #playfullearning #playfullittlelearners #letthemplay #letthemread #tapthemagictree #weloveautumnplay2019 #weloveautumnbooks #playandlearn #learningthroughplay #imaginativeplay #play #playmatters #autumnplay #woodentoys #bookish #childrensbooks #kidsbooks #sensorystorytime #sensorystorytelling #bookishwaytoplay #thebookishplayway #thebookishwaytoplay #ourbookplay #edspireplays

FLOWER FAIRY BOOKISH PLAY

View this post on Instagram

We are beginning autumn with some fairy play. I filled a box with fabric autumn leaves, wood slices, mini apples, a @holztiger_uk oak tree, glass beads to make a pool, ceramic toadstools, pine cones and acorns. The girls love flower fairies and this sensory small world is inspired by the autumn flower fairies. #somanywaystoplay #bookbasedplay #bookinspiredplay #bookishplay #fairyplay #weloveautumnplay #weloveautumnplay2019 #autumnplay #sensoryplay #sensorybin #playideas #smallworldplay #imaginativeplay #fairyplay #smallworldplayideas #trayfortheday #letthemplay #timetoplay #playmatters #toddlerplay #preschoolplay #bookishwaytoplay #thebookishplayway #thebookishwaytoplay #ourbookplay #edspireplays

FLETCHER AND THE FALLING LEAVES BOOKISH PLAY

View this post on Instagram

Have you read Fletcher and the Falling Leaves. It is such a lovely story about a baby fox cub who has a favourite tree and is worried that it is sick as it’s leaves start to change colour and fall off. The little fox wants to help the tree and cannot understand why no one else is worried or alarmed. This is a heartwarming illustration of seasonal changes seen through the eyes of a child. #autumn #aweandwonder #savourtheseason #weloveautumnbooks #autumntrees #autumnleaves #weloveautumnplay #weloveautumnplay2019 #trayfortheday #bookishplay #bookbasedplay #bookinspiredplay #playfullearning #invitationtoread #invitationtoplay #sensorystorytime #sensorystorytelling #seasonaltales #woodentoys @harpercollinsuk @tenderleaftoys @threadbear.design @holztiger_uk @janod.uk #play #readandplay #bookishwaytoplay #thebookishplayway #thebookishwaytoplay #ourbookplay #edspireplays

THE ENORMOUS POTATO BOOKISH PLAY

View this post on Instagram

Edie is absolutely obsessed with this book, The Enormous Potato. It is based on The Enormous / Gigantic Turnip. In this story the farmer is helped by his wife, his daughter, their dog, their cat and a mouse. They all then wash the potato, chop the potato, salt and butter the potato and then, of course, eat the potato. I have set up this super simple #bookishplay so that Edie can act out the story. I cannot wait to hear her storytelling. She is really good at it … for a two year old! #bookstagram #childrensbooks #bookbasedplay #bookinspiredplay #traditionaltales #storytelling #readchatplay #invitationtoplay #invitationtoread #sensorystorytime #sensorystorytelling #weloveautumnplay #weloveautumnplay2019 #weloveautumnbooks #theenormouspotato #bookish #picturebook #picturebooks #booksforchildren #bookishwaytoplay #thebookishplayway #thebookishwaytoplay #ourbookplay #edspireplays

HARVEST SENSORY BOOKISH PLAY

View this post on Instagram

Edie and I have had a fine old time with some seasonal vegetables this week. We painted them, painted with them, washed them, gave them a bath, dried them and then chopped them up. As we cut them we had a good look at their insides and smelt them too. Edie thought that the parsnip smelled yummy and the turnip smelt yucky. Edie was surprised that the sweet potato was bright orange inside. This was a lovely activity and we talked about vegetables and how they grow and we talked about farms and harvest. This was a lovely little toddler sensory playtime with some slightly gone off veg! #harvesttime #harvestfestival #autumn #savourtheseason #weloveautumnplay #weloveautumnplay2019 #autumnplay #sensoryplay #sensoryplaytime #toddlerfun #toddlerplay #preschoolplay #playfullearning #messyplay #bookishwaytoplay #thebookishplayway #thebookishwaytoplay #ourbookplay #edspireplays #enwcautumnequinox #autumnequinox

THAT’S NOT MY HEDGEHOG CONKER PLAY

View this post on Instagram

This week I am starting to work on number bonds to 10 with Bea. As it is autumn and she is loving hedgehog tales Esther and I have made ten conker hedgehogs for her to use in her maths lessons this week. We will use them to see how many different ways we can make the numbers 5 to 10. I am also going to use the little hedgehogs with Edie to work on her one to one correspondence when counting. She can recite numbers to 20 but her counting can be a little haphazard. I think these cute little hodgehegs will help and staring our counting games with some hedgehog songs and stories. We used acrylic pens to draw on our conkers to make these cute little counting creatures. #somanywaystoplay #playandlearn #playfullearning #learningthroughplay #eyfsmaths #earlymaths #countingskills #numberbonds #numberbondsto10 #earlyyearsideas #autumnplay #weloveautumnplay #weloveautumnplay2019👈 #weloveautumnplay2019 #bookishplay #bookishmaths #bookbasedplay #playfulmaths #childrensbooks #picturebooks #childrensbookstagram #hedgehogs #conkers #playfulmaths #bookishwaytoplay #thebookishplayway #thebookishwaytoplay #ourbookplay #edspireplays

HEDGEHOGS AND HIBERNATION BOOKISH PLAY

View this post on Instagram

We are learning about hedgehogs and hibernation this week. I have setup this book inspired small world play for Edie and Bea to retell two of our favourite stories. It Was A Cold Dark Night by @timhopgood tells the story of Ned the hedgehog looking for a place to sleep for winter. He finds rabbits in their burrow, foxes in their den, bats in the barn and owls nesting in the trees. The bat tells Ned to look down where he sees a lovely crunchy pile of leaves to sleep in for the winter. In Wide Awake Hedgehog our prickly friend does not want to go to sleep. All the other animals are too busy to play, squirrel is collecting nuts, dormouse is making a nest. The North Wind plays with the little hedgehog and wears him out so he is ready to settle down and sleep all winter. These two books are just perfect for introducing the idea of hibernation to very young children and this bookish play set up lets them explore further. Edie loves me to read out the story while she plays. She makes the animals move and interact and is very good at doing their voices. We have used some fabric autumn leaves, a selection of wooden animals and trees to create this woodland setting. We will add to it throughout the week I think with natural autumn treasures we finds while out on our adventures. Happy Monday! What will you be playing today?

STACKING SQUIRRELS AUTUMN PLAY

View this post on Instagram

Squirrel’s Autumn Search is an old favourite here. A lovely tale for the season and fits well with our Hibernation topic. I have paired the book with a classic That’s Not My from @usborne_books and this stacking game from @janod.uk The Squirrel can stand firmly on the ground or for an extra challenge balance on the wooden rocker. You then have to stack as many acorns as you can without them falling off. Great for developing patience, problem solving, collaborative working and fine motor skills. We use the acorns all the time for maths work and to add to small world play. Although perfect for autumn the Janod Squirrel Stacker would also make a great Christmas gift for a toddler or preschool aged child #somanywaystoplay

PUMPKIN SOUP BOOKISH PLAY

FIVE LITTLE PUMPKINS SNACKTIVITY

ROOM ON THE BROOM SENSORY SEARCH AND FIND

View this post on Instagram

Room on the Broom Treasure Hunt Tray. I have created a treasure hunt in a tray for Bea and Edie tomorrow. They have a list of items to find that I have hidden in a tray of @lidlgb Halloween pasta. There is a cat and a dog, a bird and a frog, a broom, a wand, two stars, a toadstool, an owl and more. After reading the story they will search the tray to see how many of the items they can find. They can then take turns hiding and seeking. You can also use this tray to play a memory game where the children have to remember all the things on the tray and then recognise which item I remove. Kim’s game I think that is called? There are lots of ways to play with this book inspired #trayfortheday #somanywaystoplay #roomonthebroom #bookish #bookishplay #bookbasedplay #bookinspiredplay #readchatplay #sensorystorytime #sensorystorytelling #eyfsideas #invitationtoreadandplay #welovehalloweenplay #halloweenplay #weloveautumnplay2019 #weloveautumnplay #welovehalloweenplay2019 #childrensbooks #kidsbooks #kidsbookstagram #picturebooks

STICKMAN SNACKTIVITY

AUTUMN LEAVES BOOK BASED PLAY

View this post on Instagram

We are having a slow day today except that Edie, age 2, does not understand the concept so I have set up some bookish play invitations for her, including this one inspired by the book Leaves by David Ezra Stein. The story of a little bear and his first autumn. He is very worried about the trees in the wood as they start to lose their leaves. He tries to catch them and put them back on but it is just not the same. In the end he feels sleepy and fills a hole with the freshly fallen leaves, he goes to sleep in his cosy hibernacular just as winter arrives. When he wakes in spring the trees are in bud and he welcomes the tiny new leaves as they begin to unfold. A lovely little story to start conversations about autumn leaves, seasons and hibernation. Teamed with a mug tree and autumn coloured @joguines_grapat rings for hanging and stacking you have a super simple seasonal invitation to read and play #somanywaystoplay
