Book Review: All Through The Night

This month is Non Fiction November
And the theme this year is Heroes
All Through The Night
Written by Polly Faber and illustrated by Harriet Hobday
Shines a light on those heroes that work through the night
To make our days run more smoothly

The sky is getting dark
In a big city
A little girl is eating her dinner
Brushing her teeth
And getting ready for bed

Meanwhile
Her mother is putting on her coat
And getting ready to go out to work

As readers we head out into the night too
Where we see lots of important people
At work

We meet Sammy, a cleaner
Georgio, a security guard
Hassan and Amina, out on police patrol
We see how different jobs in the community are connected
We meet Kisi, a local news reporter
A musician called Lem
We see people buying groceries and fuel from Eva
At the garage

The little girl narrates the story
Sharing with us tales she has been told by her mummy
About the heroes who work through the night
Making deliveries
Stacking shelves
Baking bread
Fixing train tracks

We see paramedics, doctors and nurses
Working hard to save lives
And midwifes
Helping to bring new life into the world

We are reminded of all the parents working through the night
With sleepless babies and children

While many of us sleep
The world does not stop
Life in the big city continues all around us
Real life, everyday heroes
Working all through the night
To make our days a little brighter, easier, cleaner

And just as the little girl gets up for breakfast
Her mummy is coming home to bed

She gives her mummy a cuddle and thanks her for helping everyone
All through the night

This is such a lovely book from Nosy Crow
Showing little readers all the jobs that are done
Round the clock
To keep us safe
To keep things moving
Edie found it absolutely fascinating that there are people
Who work all night and sleep all day
We spent a long time poring over the pages of this book
The illustrations are beautiful and there are lots of little details to spot

This book pairs brilliantly with Lifesavers from Magic Cat Publishing

Both books are brilliant for young children to learn about
Different jobs in the community
About the people who help us
And why they are our heroes

“… real life heroes don’t wear cloaks or capes.
Their heroic powers come from their minds, hearts and able hands.
We all have the opportunity to be a hero every now and again.
What will you be when you grow up?”
Dr Zoe Williams, Life Savers

We were sent a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review
