Fletcher and the Rockpool

This morning we headed to the beach
To play in the sand and explore the rockpools
We took with us one of our favourite summer books
The brilliant and beautiful Fletcher and the Rockpool

We adore Fletcher
He is a gorgeous little fox
Who loves to explore nature
And is getting to grips with how the world works
With help from his forest friends
And in this new seaside adventure
With the help of a watchful seagull

Mum and Fletcher are heading out of the wood
To the beach
While Mum makes a camp in the golden dunes
Fletcher races off to explore

Fletcher acts in a way so familiar
To little readers and their grown ups
Racing on to the sand
Dipping his toes in the sea
Scrambling over rocks
And exploring rockpools

As Fletcher peers into the water
He sees seaweed and a sea anemone
Periwinkles, limpets and little fish

As Fletcher observes life in the pool
He notices that it is shrinking
Fletcher panics and worries
For all the living things
He is determined to save the sea creatures
And heads for the ocean to
Bring back bucket after bucket of water

Fletcher does not understand where the water is going
A friendly seagull tries to explain and reassure Fletcher
But the little fox is very sad and scared
For his new little friends

Fletcher catches a tiny crab in his bucket
And is determined to save it from the tide
Whatever the tide may be?

The crab spends the night
With Fletcher and Mum at their camp
Nestled in a seaweed blanket

In the morning they wake to find
The sea has returned
The pool is full of water and life again
Fletcher puts the crab back amongst the rocks
And paddles in the sparkling sea

This is such a lovely story
The perfect addition to the Fletcher and the Seasons series
Written by the wonderful Julia Rawlinson
And illustrated by the talented Tiphanie Beeke

This is the perfect book to read on the beach this summer
A wonderful way to talk to children about the tide
A fabulous way to talk to children about rockpooling
How we can observe and enjoy the creatures living there
But we must be careful and respectful
We must always leave the animals and the habitat as we find them
Can little readers find periwinkles and limpets?
Can they find a crab and see how it moves?
What colours of seaweed can little readers find?
What other creatures can they find in rockpools?
A brilliant and beautiful book that would make a gorgeous gift
The perfect springboard for summer learning
And gorgeous inspiration for sensory small world play
We will be creating our own rockpools this week
And trying to recreate the movement of the tides

Do you and your little ones love beach days?
Splashing in the sea and exploring rockpools
If you do, this is the perfect book for you
With a glittering surprise at the end!
