The Marlowe Theatre For Families Spring 2023

We are so lucky to have The Marlowe Theatre in Canterbury

As our local theatre

We love making an event of our theatre trips

Learning about the shows we see before we attend

Having dinner in Canterbury before the show

And reviewing the show together as a family after watching

Here are some of the highlights we are looking forward to

At The Marlowe Theatre in Canterbury in 2023

Unexpected Twist

I have heard great things about this twisted tale. This is a re-telling of the Charles Dickens classic, Oliver Twist, by one of the best-loved figures in the children’s book world, Michael Rosen. I adore Oliver Twist and Michael Rosen so this feels like a must see.

Combining two stories in one; Rosen’s story and the Dickens classic that inspired it. Two stories that twist together, unexpectedly!

Shona and her class are studying the book, Oliver Twist. She’s the new girl in school and is finding it hard to stay out of trouble – much like Oliver himself! When she’s given a new phone by a stranger, she begins to suspect there’s something unusual about the new boys she’s met.

Matthew Bourne’s Sleeping Beauty

We have seen Matthew Bourne’s Romeo and Juliet and The Nutcracker so we are super excited about Sleeping Beauty.

A thrilling and evocative gothic love story.

Matthew Bourne’s Sleeping Beauty reawakens, celebrating 10 years since its premiere at Sadlers Wells, when it became the fastest selling production in the company’s history.

Now established as a firm favourite in the New Adventures repertoire, the award-winning Sleeping Beauty has enchanted international audiences throughout the UK and across the globe.

Enter a wondrous world of magical fairies and vampires, where the timeless tale of good vs evil is turned upside-down, creating a supernatural love story that even the passage of time itself cannot hinder. Will Princess Aurora ever find her true love again?

With an unforgettable score, sumptuous sets and costumes, evocative lighting and masterly storytelling, the beloved fairy tale is brought to life by the uniquely talented New Adventures company. Get ready to be transported in time from the halcyon days of the late Edwardian era through to the modern day in this dazzling gothic romance.

It sounds brilliant!

An Inspector Calls

This reminds me of GCSE English but think this will be a tad more exciting than a book study!

When Inspector Goole arrives unexpectedly at the prosperous Birling family home, their peaceful dinner party is shattered by his investigations into the death of a young woman. His startling revelations shake the very foundations of their lives and challenge us all to examine our consciences. More relevant now than ever, this is a must-see for a whole new generation.

Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story

This! This is a show I am desperate to see because this is the soundtrack to my childhood. I think I still know every word to every song thanks to my Dad who absolutely adores Buddy Holly and passed on his love for rock and roll to me.

This sensational multi award-winning West End show first opened in 1989 and has been thrilling audiences around the world ever since. Now it triumphantly returns.

Forget feel good, Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story is FEEL GREAT! Experience the drama, passion and excitement as a multi-talented cast of actor-musicians tell Buddy Holly’s story, from his Texas rockabilly beginnings to international stardom and his legendary final performance at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa, before his tragic death at the age of just 22.

Featuring two terrific hours of the greatest songs ever written, including That’ll Be The Day, Oh Boy, Rave On, La Bamba, Chantilly Lace, Johnny B. Goode, Raining In My Heart, Everyday, Shout and many many more, this show is just Peggy Sue-perb!

Julius Caesar

The RSC is back at The Marlowe with Julius Caesar.

A divisive leader who holds awesome power.

Concerned that Caesar poses a threat to democracy, revolutionaries take the violent decision to murder him. They have no plan for what comes next. As the world spins out of control, chaos, horror and superstition rush in to fill the void. Civil war erupts and a new leader must rise: but at what cost?

This is a show that the twins and I would really love to see as we are studying Shakepseare and are already booked to see The Tempest at The Globe this Easter.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

The twins and I were lucky enough to see this twice in The West End. It was absolutely amazing! Now that Bea is older I am very much hoping to take her to see this brilliant musical adaptation.

Roald Dahl’s devilishly delicious tale of young golden ticket winner Charlie Bucket and wild confectionary wizard Willy Wonka will take you to a world of Pure Imagination.

When Charlie wins a golden ticket to the weird and wonderful Wonka Chocolate Factory, it’s a chance of a lifetime to feast on the sweets they’ve always dreamed of. But beyond the gates astonishment awaits, as down the sugary corridors and amongst the incredible and edible delights, the five lucky winners discover not everything is as sweet as it seems.

This dazzling reinvention of the successful West End and Broadway musical transports the show to mouth-watering new heights. With music and lyrics by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman (Hairspray), take a journey choc-full of fantastical treats to dazzle your senses for this family adventure more satisfying than a Whipple-Scrumptious Fudge Mallow Delight.
