The Girl Who Loves Bugs

“Curiosity leads to adventures …”

Lily Murray and Jenny Lovlie
Have once again created
A character we adore
A story that warms our hearts
And a message for us
To live by
Here at Edspire HQ
My girls who LOVE
Dresses with pockets
Now feel that Lily and Jenny
Have given them the okay
To fill those pockets with
BUGS!

When Edie and I read
The Girl Who Loves Bugs
She insists I change the name
Evie to Edie
She longs to be
And is actually
Very similar to
This nature loving
Resourceful
Curious
Kind and
Passionate little girl
Who is living her
Very best life
In this gorgeous story

Evie lives with her
Two mums
And her older brother
She spends much
Of her time
Close to the ground
Watching and
Collecting bugs
With her field guide and
Her magnifying glass
Evie loves hunting for
And observing insects
Evie is mad for minibeast
She is
The GIRL who LOVES BUGS

But Evie’s family do NOT
Feel the same
They think bugs are
Disgusting
Dirty and scary

With her outside time
Limited because of
A family gathering
Evie decides to take
Her bug collection
INSIDE

(I can totally imagine
Our Edie
Doing exactly this!)

She collects up insects
And takes them to her room
Where the bugs all begin
To make themselves at home

At night while Evie is sleeping
The bugs begin to head
Out of the darkness
Of her bedroom
Toward the landing light

Edie gasps whenever we
Turn to this page
She knows that many bugs
Like light and she knows
Evie’s bugs are
Making their great escape

As Evie’s family arrive
For the gathering
There are bugs
EVERYWHERE

There are so many things
I LOVE about this book
The many brilliant and beautiful bugs
The diverse cast of human characters
The playful verse
That describes the natural world
So wonderfully
The character of Evie
Evie’s tiny pocket pal
(They may get a grid post
Of their own!)

I love the spring colours
The tiny details in every scene
That will inspire children
To tell stories of their own

We are already planning
Some bookish learning
Around this book

We are going to write
A funny poem about
Bugs in the bedroom

We are going to draw
Pictures of a room
In our house
Filled with insects

We are going to write
Some of this story
From the point of view
Of Evie’s pocket pal

We are going to write
A performance poem
Based on the
Bugs at dinner scene
(This would also be
A perfect scene
To improvise around
In a drama lesson)

AND we are going to
Design and make
Our very own
Minibeast Zoo
Inspired by Evie’s
Rather awesome
Super glamorous Gran

We are also going to
Learn more about
Evelyn Cheesman
(the inspiration for
Evie’s story)
And what it means
To be an entomologist

This is such a joy filled
Book about being curious
About embracing the
Wild world we live in
And getting to know
The creatures
Big and small
We share our
Wild world with

A story of
Mighty girls and
Minibeast mayhem
To make you smile
Nod knowingly
And laugh out loud

Filled with bug-friendly tips
To get little readers outside
Making Twig Towers and
A Palace of Pinecones
For all creatures
Great and small

The perfect spring story
To read alfresco
With little readers
To encourage curious minds
And inspire kindness

Perfect for taking
On a Bug Hunt
For starting off
A Minibeast project
And for starting a
Discussion with
Young readers
About what they
Might like to be
When they grow up

Will they be curious explorers
Like Evie and Evelyn?

Whatever little readers
Decide to be
This book will capture
Their imaginations
And ensure that they
(In the words of Maddie Moate)
Stay Curious!

“… Who knows
What wonders she
May one day find.”
