Music Play: An Introduction

Music is something I have always been passionate about.

One of my favourite things to do in the world is sing.

I have my heart set on getting Gareth Malone to organise a choir for bereaved parents.

How powerful would that be?

Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything.
– Plato

Music has always been pivotal at important times in my life.

Perhaps most importantly at our wedding and Baby Tilda’s Goodbye.

All our children have been introduced to music from an early age. Every birthday and Christmas they are bought new instruments to play with and explore, we sing all the time, we use music for playing and relaxing, we use music for learning and love rocking out to what is affectionately known here as ‘Dadda Moosic’.

I have written about music and instruments and music classes on the blog many times before but now I want to write a more in depth feature about musicality and play.

As a teacher I used music in many of my lessons across the curriculum and I also used music to help structure the school day.

As a parent I am seeing more and more the power of music in play and learning and in our daily routine.

Music Play is going to be a series of posts from me and guest bloggers about how music can be used for early learning and play.

We will be learning about why classical music is important for babies and toddlers and beyond.

We will be exploring nursery rhymes and lullabies.

We will make our own instruments and finding things around the house that make music.

We will use music for storytelling.

We will explore how music can be used for learning letters and numbers.

We will look at listening games and activities as well as exploring a range of ways to make lots of noise!

The fact that children can make beautiful music is less significant than the fact that music can make beautiful children.

I have lots of ideas and some great posts coming from other parents, teachers and professional musicians.

If you would like to write a post for Edspire about Music Play or Music in the Early Years, then please do get in touch.
