Wedding Alphabet: M is for Music

Music plays a vital part in our wedding and indeed our marriage. Music is important to David and I. We love good music and have a lot of songs that mean something special to us. A lot of songs that we want included in our special day. I would like to use this post to share some of them with you today.

The first piece of music will be used when the bride (that’s me!) arrives at the church but before I make my entrance. It is the song that most reminds me of David and is a song he sang to me back in 2007, when I first realised that this was the man I would be with for the rest of my life. It is The White Stripes.

The next song is played for the entrance of the bridesmaids. It is a song that I have sung en route to many a family wedding and is good fun for the girls to sashay up the aisle to!

For my entrance it was the lyrics that were important for me. I wanted to mean the words. I wanted the melody to have a sense of occasion but I wanted most a song where people would really listen to and hear the words. I have chosen REM.

The next two pieces of music are played whilst David and I sign the registers. We are going to show a slideshow of photographs of the two of us over the years. The two songs we have chosen are by Elbow and The Cure. This The Cure song is our song but we could not have it for our first dance as it is not easy to dance to, besides we have another ‘our song’ for that. The Elbow song is just a beautiful piece of theatrical music with great simple lyrics about love. Elbow opened for U2 when we saw them at Wembley so there is significance in that experience too.

This song but The Cure version

At the end of our marriage ceremony we will be leaving the church to this and I cannot wait. Will be one of the musical highlights of the day!

There will be music playing throughout the day. Songs carefully chosen by David and I will enhance our special day.

The next key tune will be played as David and I enter the wedding breakfast and it is this, by Johnny Cash.

After dinner we will have our first dance to One of Those Rivers by Dodgy. This is David and I’s other ‘our song’!

I then throw my bouquet at just the right part of this song and our carefully planned evening dancing playlist begins with a bang!

I am so excited about the dancing! I just cannot wait!

Our final song, as we leave our wedding day behind, will be by the awesome Primal Scream. What a great band and an amazing tune to end the night as we leave to a sparkler farewell as Mr and Mrs Henley!

I believe!!!!!

If you are coming to our wedding, do not forget your dancing shoes!!!!

  1. Really enjoyed reading this! Music was hugely important at our wedding too. I walked down the isle to The Final Countdown, signed the register to Have yourself a merry little Christmas (it was dec 20th) and walked out man and wife to morcombe and wise singing bring me sunshine – and yes, everyone did the dance. First dance was The Pogues Fairytale of New York – last dance was Jonny Cash, thing called love. I always love hearing about wedding music ( love that white stripes track too btw) xx

  2. Music is also important to us! We decided to get married at a faithless gig (also decided never to go to another faithless gig!) And we spent hours choosing the music for our wedding. The relevant CDs still have little stickers on them telling the organisers which songs go where! I walked down the aisle to Air and we played badly drawn boy as we signed the register (we got married 11 years ago!!). We didn’t have a first dance but every single song that played at the reception had been painstakingly chosen by both of us. Going to gigs together is ‘our thing’ and now I feel so sad that we haven’t done it in so long! I think I will dig out our wedding music to see whats on there 🙂
Jennie this sounds like such a special day and I too love the white stripes track, and the primal scream track too. Once more, you have inspired a new blog post from me!
    xxxx

  3. We love music too – I walked down the aisle to Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds ‘The Ship Song’. It was perfect. I can’t see what Cure song you chose now but we’re huge fans and have many favourites – Just Like Heaven springs to mind…

We also have another our song – Northern Sky by Nick Drake. May have inspired a future blog post from me too x

Ps: Have you heard Alt J? They won the Mercury prize this year, I think. They have a lovely song called Matilda. It’s my daughter’s favourite at the moment x

  6. My husband to be and I are choosing our wedding music at the moment. “Our” song is Lovesong by The Cure and we are thinking of either having it as we sign the register or our first dance 🙂
