Spring Flowers Playful Learning in Pictures

What a sunny week!

The children have been playing outside a lot this week

Making the most of the weather

But we have also learned lots about flowers

View this post on Instagram

We have had a busy week learning all about spring flowers and plant lifecycles. Everyone from Edie to William have worked at their level and enjoyed play activities linked in to our theme. Tonight I am going to write a post on my blog sharing how I plan a weekly theme, where Iook for ideas, inspiration and resources, how I manage four children all doing different things at different development stages. I am an experience primary school teacher with experience from reception to Year 6 but more importantly than that I am a home educating mummy of four creative and playful children and I want to share our passion for books and playful learning in the hope that it might help. I will pop the link in my bio tonight. Next week we embark on a Minibeast Mayhem Adventure! #homeeducation #homeeducator #homeschoolmama #homelearning #playfullearning #playandlearn #learningthroughplay #bettertogether #playmatters #ourhomeedlife #ourhomeedjourney

Toddler Activities

Edie will be three in May. She loves to learn and be busy. She loves doing ‘work’ with her older siblings. Edie’s ‘work’ is often linked to colours, shapes, patterns, numbers and letters. She loves seek and find games, she loves matching games. Edie loves puzzles and games. She also loves painting. I try to make sure we do a mix of paper activities alongside practical and physical tasks and lots of free play. Edie is most happy when messy and outside. Inside she does love a printable that has a similar theme to her big siblings. Today Edie has been doing a dab a dot painting and a pattern matching game. These were all free printables. For free fun and creative learning activities for toddlers and preschoolers we use @totschooling @homeschool4me #preschoolmom #themeasuredmom I try to have a stock of activities ready for Edie each day to punctuate her play and to enable her to sit up at the table and feel part of the home ed gang x #toddlerlife #toddlerfun #toddlerlearning #preschoolactivities #preschoolathome #homeeducation #homeeducationuk #homeeducator #playfullearning #homelearning #largefamilylife #motheroffive #teachermummy #earlylearning #eyfsideas #playandlearn

Spring Gardening

View this post on Instagram

Spent much of Mother’s Day in Tilda’s memory garden. Think we are going to put a pond in. Water makes us feel closer to Tilda and as we cannot go to the sea, river or stream for a while we are going to bring the water to us and make a special feature in her garden. Edie and Bea were keen garden helpers today and we did some lovely spring sensory play with some of the flowers from the garden. Tomorrow I will show you the different ways we have used the flowers in our play and learning #somanywaystoplay #matildamae #springgarden #springgardening #springflowers #memorygarden #mothersday #babyloss #babylossmama #bereavedmother #rainbowbabies #livingfortilda #stayhome

Petal Potions Sensory Play

View this post on Instagram

Spring has sprung and the garden is blooming! Yesterday we tidied Baby Tilda’s memory garden and collected some flowers for our play and learning this week. Yesterday we did some petal potion making. Edie and Bea were silent and so focused for ages with this activity. The only words they uttered were ‘Can I have some more water please?’ The focus as they picked their petals, measured and mixed their potions was wonderful. Bea was telling me all the magical properties of her potions. We love potion making and this was such a lovely spring activity for little ones. We talked about colours, numbers, measuring and parts of flowers. #somanywaystoplay and a whole lot of learning going on! #springflowers #playathome #playfullearning #playandlearn #learningthroughplay #potionmaking #natureplay #sensoryplay #toddlerfun #toddlerplay #preschoolplay #preschoolathome #preschoolactivities #flowerplay #welovespringplay #oursensoryspring

Picking Apart Flowers

View this post on Instagram

Before our petal potion making we made all the ingredients we would need from flowers and other plants in the garden. This was a great activity for developing fine motor skills, for grouping and organising, counting and colour vocabulary. It was also a lovely practical, sensory way to introduce flower names and the names of different parts of plants and flowers. Edie, Bea and I loved taking the flowers apart and making a tray of potion ingredients while Esther loved flower arranging in mason jars and mini milk bottles #somanywaystoplay this was such a calm gentle quiet activity. The first of many spring flower activities we will be sharing these week. #welovespringplay #springplay #sensoryplay #oursensoryspring #springflowers #flowerplay #playfullearning #playandlearn #playathome #toddlerfun #toddlerplay #preachoolplay #preschoolathome #homeeducation #homelearning #learningthroughplay

Daffodil Dissection

View this post on Instagram

Every year we dissect a daffodil following an activity guide from @nurturestore Using magnifying glasses we look really closely at the different parts of the flower. We take the plant apart and make an exploded diagram labelling the different parts of the flower. The children love doing this. Edie loved opening the ovary and finding all the ovules. Such a simple activity and so much to learn together. You can also compare the daffodil with other flowers. The awesome @maddiemoate and @gregfoot dissect a daffodil on their live show today and explain all the science behind flowers and pollination. We will be catching up with the show this evening and dissecting along!! Do let us know if you have a go too x

Spring Alphabet Match

View this post on Instagram

Bea and I had great fun this morning with this spring garden alphabet hunt from @playfullyprimary Bea had to match capital letter to lowercase letter and find a picture of something that started with that letter. It was great fun and we talked about letter names, letter sounds and alphabetical order. A really pretty resource with #somanywaystoplay and a whole lot of learning going on. You can also use the letter cards for practical and sensory spelling activities. A great resource for learning at home. #homeeducation #ourhomeedlife #homeed #homeeducator #earlyyears #eyfsideas #ks1english #year1 #primaryeducation #homelearning #playfullearning #learningthroughplay #sensoryspelling #alphabetactivities #lettersandsounds #welovespringplay #oursensoryspring #springprintables

Flower Stall Role Play

View this post on Instagram

Ending a busy week of flower play with our very own Flower Stall. Here you can buy small posies, single blooms, pots of seeds and more. Role play on our stall includes counting, mark making, reading, calculating, lots of imaginative play and real life role play. So much rich language used about colours and parts of flowers. The printables from @twinklresources have helped inspire some writing and maths. #somanywaystoplay #whowillbuy #whowillbuymysweetredroses #roleplay #imaginativeplay #creativeplay #welovespringplay #springplay #springflowers #flowerplay #oursensoryspring #dramaticplay @great_little_trading_co @threadbear.design @tenderleaftoys #playfullearning #fridayfeeling #toddlerlife #toddlerplay #preschoolactivities #preschoolplay #preschoolathome #siblingplay #letthemplay #timetoplay

Seed and Pots Play

View this post on Instagram

Glass beads as seeds and some pots. Super simple sensory play to encourage counting and one to one correspondence. Can we put two seeds in this pot? This pot needs five seeds. Let’s put two seeds in each pot. Can we take one seed out of each pot. Also a great activity to use the vocabulary of capacity. This pot is full. This pot is empty. Can we half fill this pot? Can we empty half the seeds from this pot. Edie loved this activity. She loved scooping and pouring, moving the seeds from pot to pot. After a while I got out our @greentoysinc flowers so that her seeds could sprout and bloom. She loved arranging the flowers, telling me about their colours and shapes and naming the different parts of the flower. She knows leaf, stem, petal, seed and bulb. We have had a wonderful week of playful learning with spring flowers. #playandlearn #playislearning #playfullearning #oursensoryspring #oursensoryspringtime #sensoryplay #eyfsideas #earlylearning #numbersandcounting #finemotorskills #springflowers #welovespringplay #letthemplay #preschoolplay #preschoolathome #toddlerplay #toddlerplayideas #somanywaystoplay

Seed Counting

View this post on Instagram

Counting seeds. This would have been much better if we had used real seeds but was very pretty with glass beads in the sunshine. Edie was practising her counting and one to one correspondence. This is something we have been working on for a while. She is great with reciting numbers and knows lots of big numbers but her counting is rather creative so I build lots of opportunities for counting objects into our play. Manipulating little objects like this is also great for developing fine motor skills and strengthening fingers ready for writing. Edie has been asking me this week if she can do ‘work’ with a pencil so we are going to start some pre writing skills this week. She is so desperate to be like her older siblings. Edie loved this activity. She loved the feel and sounds of the glass pebbles. A super simple sensory activity for toddlers and preschoolers. You could adapt this to fit any topic. Counting dinosaurs, pieces of pasta, buttons, socks, anything that you might have at home. We will be doing this again next week with bugs for our week of Minibeast Mayhem! #somanywaystoplay
