Book Review: The Toys’ Christmas

“The oldest toy of all, Slowpoke the Tortoise, speaks.
Welcome friends! Here we are again, gathered for our long journey. The stars and moon will light our way. Is everybody ready? Then let’s go!”

It is Christmas Eve. All the toys of the world must make a special journey. They gather together for a special mission, to “trudge through huge forests, over high mountains and across sparkling frozen rivers.” The toys are marching to Father Christmas as they do every year to tell him what their child wants for Christmas.

In The Toys’ Christmas we meet Noah. It is the night before Christmas and his favourite soft toy, Fanfan, is missing!

Noah has no idea that Fanfan is making a very special journey with all the the other toys. As we observe the toys gathering and travelling we hear tales of their lives with their families. The toys talk to make the time pass faster as they travel.

It would be wonderful for children to imagine what their toys might say about them on the journey. It would also be lovely for children to draw portraits of their favourite toys and to draw or write the journey they might make from home to The North Pole.

The toys tell Santa their children’s wishes and Santa Claus helps them decide on the best gift and through these exchanges we learn that there are some things Father Christmas cannot deliver and some sensitive wishes that Santa cannot make come true.

I love the dreamy illustrations in this book and the warm reds that floss the pages as the toys reach Lapland and Santa’s workshop.

For any child who has ever wondered how Father Christmas always knows just what they want … this is the most enchanting endearing magical festive tale x

One for a book advent or for your Christmas Eve box. It is perfect x
