Lore Of The Land

We are currently on holiday in Cornwall
Enjoying the wild windy days
And catching lots of waves

One of the many reasons we are here this year
Is because the children have been reading
Arthur The Always King
Alongside many books of myths and legends
And stories from The Land of Fae

We are a family who love folklore
We love learning about nature
And the wild earth
Last year we reviewed a stunning book
From Quarto Kids
Lore Of The Wild
Today I want to tell you about
Lore Of The Land

This is a magnificent compendium of
Folklore and Wisdom from The Wild Earth
This is a book what weaves together
Folktales and nature lore from around the world
It invites readers to explore the hidden magic
In forests, under the sea, on mountains
And in all wild places
As with Lore of The Land
This is a book to complement and inspire the reading of
So many other wonderful, magical books
A book to reveal and revel in
The wise wisdom and sage signs nature is trying to tell us
We are reading this alongside the myths and legends
Of King Arthur and Merlin
We are also reading The October Witches
Pages & Co The Treehouse Library
And The Tree Keepers

Lore of the Land
Journeys through Forests
Seas and Oceans
Mountains
Hills and Valleys
Rivers and Lakes
And Wetlands

My big kids love linking all they learn
To the tales of Tolkien
Sophie Anderson
Tim Tilley
Phil Hickes
Skye McKenna
And so many more

Every page of this brilliant and beautiful book
Is gorgeously designed
There are stories of old
A Czech tale
An Irish legend
A Portugese folktale
And more

For every section there is a story
Information about creation stories
Flora and fauna
Spirits
Mythical and magical creatures

We have learned so much from this book
And I thought I would share with you
Just some of our discoveries

In Lituanian folklore, Medeina is the ‘mother of forests’.
She looks after all the tree, plants and animals
That reside in the woods
Protecting them from hunters

When it is time for the fairies to gather
In the woods
The bluebell tolls
But beware!
If a human follows the sound
Of the ringing bells into the forest
They will never be seen again

Tapio is a Finnish forest spirit
Who has lichen for a beard
And moss as eyebrows
Tapio is the protector
Of all woodland animals

Japanese mermaids are called ningyo
They have the body of a fish
With the face of a monkey
It is considered extremely unlucky
For a fisherman to catch a ningyo

In Germanic lore
Dwarves dwell deep under mountains
In marvellous palaces
Here they make magical weapons and armour

Any stretch of water with lots of duckweed
Growing on its surface
Could be hiding Jenny Greenteeth
A river spirit from English folklore
She lurked beneath waiting to pull
Children and old people into the depths

To remember the difference between
Sedges, rushes and grasses
Use this rhyme from English folklore
Sedges have edges, rushes are round
And grasses are hollow right up from the ground

So many wonderful stories
So much wisdom
All entwined with the wild world around us
To help us
To warn us
To inspire us

This is truly a book to treasure
One to read over and over again
It sits alongside Lore of the Wild perfectly

Both books would make wonderful gifts
They feel just right for fireside reading
As the autumn nights draw in
Making them perfect presents for Halloween
Perhaps especially for tricky to buy for
Tweens and Teens

There is magic to be found in the pages of these books
They also inspire readers to take more notice
Of the world around them
To love and protect the different habitats of the wild
